Frequently Asked Tax Questions
If you've received a notice of reassessment from the CRA indicating you owe additional funds, what's the next step?
Before making any payments, it’s important to get in touch with us. We will verify the accuracy of the information provided in the notice.
What's the last date to submit my tax returns?
For this year, the final date to file your taxes is April 30, 2024 . Starting from May 1, 2024 , late submission penalties and interest will accrue on a monthly basis. To avoid any penalties, it’s recommended to file your taxes as soon as possible.
The general deadline is April 30th. However, if you’re self-employed, you have until June 15th to file. But, if you owe taxes, the payment must be made by April 30th. Self-employed individuals can estimate and pay their taxes by April 30th and then adjust any difference by June 15th. This guidance also applies to HST Registrants, with interest on any unpaid amounts starting May 1st.
If I have numerous medical expenses paid out of pocket, how should I organize and submit this information?
To optimize your tax preparation process and potentially reduce fees, consider the following strategies:
Request a comprehensive summary of all prescription expenses from your pharmacy for the year, which is usually provided free of charge.
Obtain an annual summary of your claims from your insurance provider.
Organize your receipts by each family member and categorize them by type of expense, such as prescriptions, dental services, etc.
Verify that each receipt includes essential details like the date, service provider’s name, description of the service, and the amount paid.
If I need to file tax returns for multiple years, what steps should I take?
If you have several years of tax returns to file, there’s no need to worry. Start by reviewing our Income Tax Checklist to gather all necessary documents. Next, schedule an appointment with us. We’ll have a brief meeting to understand your situation better and then arrange a time for you to pick up your completed returns. Approaching us earlier in the tax season is beneficial, as it provides ample time for thorough discussion and preparation.
Is it possible to receive an immediate cashback of my tax refund or pay your fee with my tax refund?
We do not provide immediate cashback for tax refunds, and we cannot accept an anticipated tax refund as payment for our services.
I own a small business or rental property. Should I submit my expense receipts to you?
We offer complimentary forms for tracking rental and business income/expenses, which are available on our “What to Bring” page or can be collected in person. When providing your information, please ensure you bring the relevant form, having filled in your annual totals in advance to reduce the cost of our tax preparation services. Original receipts do not need to be submitted to us; however, the Canada Revenue Agency advises retaining all receipts for a period of 6 years.
Is it necessary for me to provide copies of the documents I submit to you?
You don’t have to provide copies; we will return all your documents, including slips and receipts, back to you. If there’s a need for us to retain any information, we’ll take care of making photocopies ourselves
What slips are often overlooked that I should remember to bring?
Frequently missed items consist of RRSP contribution receipts from the initial 60 days of the year, reports on realized gains/losses from non-registered accounts, details on property taxes or rent, summaries of prescription, dental, and insurance claims, as well as T2202 forms for tuition expenses. For a comprehensive list, please consult our Income Tax Checklist.
How much time is required to finalize my tax return?
Provided that all necessary tax documents are submitted to us at once, we usually finish your return within 1 to 3 days. However, during April, the turnaround time may extend to 3 to 5 days due to higher demand.
Should I provide returns from previous years if I'm a new client?
Yes, if you’re new to our services or haven’t filed with us for a while, please bring your latest filed tax return.
